Planet of the Apes – Power Records Adaptations

In the 1970s, Power Records, an imprint of Peter Pan Records, produced a series of “Book and Record” sets that adapted four of the original Planet of the Apes films into comic book form, accompanied by a 45 RPM record. These sets offered an immersive experience, combining illustrated narratives with audio elements to bring the stories to life.

Planet of the Apes—Power Records brought the iconic franchise to life through their “Book and Record” sets in the 1970s. These adaptations included a 24-page full-color comic paired with a 45 RPM record, which narrated the story and enhanced the reading experience.

The series adapted the first four Planet of the Apes films:

• Planet of the Apes (1974) – Follow the tale of astronauts who discover a planet ruled by intelligent apes.
• Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1974) – A gripping sequel in which the apes uncover a hidden city with apocalyptic consequences.
• Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1974) – Apes travel back in time to Earth, causing chaos in the 1970s.
• Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1974) – Explores the fragile peace and struggles for coexistence between humans and apes.

These Book and Record sets are cherished collectibles for fans, offering a unique multimedia experience. The combination of dynamic artwork and narrative recordings made these editions stand out, capturing the spirit of the Planet of the Apes franchise in a fresh, interactive way.

In addition to the 4 comic book sets, Power Records also produced additional audio only releases.
All four adaptations were later collected for a 12″, 33 rpm compilation LP (which did not include an accompanying read-along book).

At around the same time, Power Records also released a series of three ‘Little LP’ 7″, 45 rpm records featuring completely new adventures for the characters from the Planet of the Apes TV series. These ‘Little LP’ sets consisted of audio-only records without accompanying read-along books. They were likewise collected into a 12″, 33 rpm compilation LP, with the addition of a fourth original story which had not received a stand-alone release.
